Book Takes Readers Inside Famous Veterinary Hospital

The author of a popular new book that takes a behind-the-scenes tour of one of the world’s top equine veterinary hospitals will appear on an East Coast book tour in June 2010. Leslie Guttman, author of Equine ER: Stories From a Year in the Life of an Equine Veterinary Hospital, will be in Manhattan, Long Island, and New Jersey from June 5-13. Published by Eclipse Press, Equine ER is an insider’s account of life at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in the heart of Bluegrass horse country. Readers and critics have called Equine ER “gripping,” “inspiring,” and “a beautifully written page-turner.”

Part James Herriot, part Animal Planet, Equine ER explores the power of the human-horse connection at what is often called the “Mayo Clinic” of horse hospitals. Leslie followed an elite team of vets passionately committed to saving their four-footed patients, from a famous Thoroughbred who broke down at a race to a young colt with clubfeet.

“Equine ER is a wonderful book, wrenching, uplifting, and a powerful window into the great love, empathy, and connection humans have for horses and other animals,” said Jon Katz, New York Times best-selling author of Dog Days.” “It is an emotional thriller, really, a rollercoaster, as dramatic and well-paced as it is well-written and brilliantly observed. Anybody who has ever loved an animal will be hypnotized by these wonderful stories.” Susan Richards, author of New York Times bestseller Chosen by a Horse calls Equine ER “as thrilling and drama-filled as any of the popular hospital shows on television today.”

The East Coast book signings include: June 5: Bookhampton in Southampton, N.Y. 5 p.m. June 9: Dessert Delivery in Manhattan. Noon. June 12: Words Bookstore, Maplewood, N.J. 4 p.m. June 13: The Smithtown Hunt Horse Show, Long Island. 2:30 p.m.

Equine ER went into a second printing less than six months after publication and was also chosen as the April 2010 book club selection of one of Kentucky’s largest public radio stations. Throughout her time at Rood & Riddle, Guttman documented her experience through blog posts, photographs, and video.
