Suzon Schaal traveled a long way to get to the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Championship Show Presented by John Deere in San Angelo, Texas. In fact, the Canadian traveled over 1,800 miles – but in the end, it was well worth the hours on the road. With her horse Genuine Brown Gal, she took the Reserve title in the Non Pro Two Rein, and won the World Championship in the Novice Non Pro Bridle with a 445!

“It feels pretty good,” Schaal said of winning her first World Championship. “She’s been getting better and better all week, so I’m really excited because I still have to show in the Non Pro Bridle finals tomorrow.”

For winning the World Championship the practicing equine veterinarian received a check for $3,813, a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Jackson Land & Cattle Company, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, a Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, a CR Morrison trophy and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

Schaal began riding cow horses in 2007, and Genuine Brown Gal, by Listo Pollito Lena and out of Genuine Emerald, was her first cow horse. “We’re learning as we go along. I’m riding with John Swales, and I plan to just keep showing and see where we go.”

Amanda Somerville of Phoenix, Arizona, claimed Reserve honors with her horse, Hickory Lena Made, after earning a 440.5 composite. She won $3,050, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Knight Haulers, custom spurs from Tom Balding Bits & Spurs, Rios of Mercedes boots from Rios of Mercedes, and ESP saddle pad from Classic Equine, a commemorative World Finals vest sponsored by Gist Silversmiths, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion. Hickory Lena Made is by Son Of Hickory and out of Lena Q Bar.

The NRCHA World Championship Show Presented by John Deere is held annually as part of the NRCHA Fort Dodge Animal Health Celebration of Champions in San Angelo, Texas. Along with the World Championship Show, the Celebration of Champions features the World’s Greatest Horseman and the Circle Y Ranch Southwest Reined Cow Horse Association Derby. The event began January 30, and concludes Sunday, February 7, with the World’s Greatest Horseman finals.
