The Practical Horseman magazine/Bates Horsemastership Sweepstakes/Contest Program, a bonus element to January’s George H. Morris Horsemastership Training Session, awarded multiple prizes in 2009.

As winners of the Horsemastership Sweepstakes, Rachel Fanta and Kendra Schoff both won a Bates saddle, while Eileen Matz and Helen Brew both took home a one-ton supply of Purina Premium Lifestyle horse feed. In addition, Donna Tresslar and Courtney Green each won three containers of Cosequin ASU and one framed, signed poster of Phillip Dutton from Nutramax Laboratories.

The Win a Week with Lendon Gray and Win a Week with John and Beezie Madden Contests were also part of the program. Participants in both contests were asked to write a 250-word essay for the chance to win a week-long training session with these equestrian superstars and a Bates saddle.

U.S. dressage Olympian Lendon Gray selected Karen Pikovsky of Irwin, Pa., as the winner of her contest, from hundreds of entries.

“As an instructor of both beginner-intermediate young adults and adult riders at the grass roots level, I would like to like to bring back to them tools and ideals from my week that will help them understand dressage is not just for those riding the upper levels,” said Pikovsky.

Karen Perry of Tulsa, Okla., won the week with U.S. show jumping Olympian Beezie Madden and her husband, jumping trainer John. Perry said she had to replay the voicemail message from EquiSearch.com several times before the reality of her win sank in.

Since the hunter/jumper world isn’t especially prominent in her area of the country, Perry, an up-and-coming trainer, hopes that time with the Maddens will help her learn more.

“I am willing to take any bit of wisdom and training they’d like to offer me,” she said.

The 2010 George H. Morris Horsemastership Training Session will be January 5-9 in Wellington, Fla. Auditing of the educational sessions is free and open to the public.
