October 1 was a historic day at the APHA World Championship Show, and one that saw the esteemed mare Red Hot N Stylish claim her 15^th world championship title and—remarkably—her fourth Scarlet Print Award. Red Hot N Stylish is now the only horse to have won the Scarlet Print Award four times; the award is presented to a mare who wins single-year world championships in Open, Amateur and Youth halter classes.

Red Hot N Stylish claimed world championships in Youth Aged Mares with Georgia Cook, Amateur Aged Mares with Bob Cassata and Aged mares with trainer Kelley Stone Wainscott at the 2020 APHA World Show. Making the victory even more special was the opportunity for Kelley to take the mare’s lead herself this year; though she has always prepared “Jade,” she’s always had other professionals show the mare at the World Show.

“It’s hard as a horse trainer to say ‘I’ll show yours’ and have to tell someone else you can’t. So I’ve always let others show my livestock. My husband talked me into [showing this year], and Bob and Joyce supported me,” said Kelley, who soldiered through her World Show classes with a torn meniscus in her knee. “She’s been a dream come true for me since she was born. The mare shows as tremendously for an open exhibitor as she does for Georgia, who was 7 when she won her first buckle and is 9 this year.

“The mare is one of the greatest mares in the history of any breed, certainly the Paint breed. Her mind, her try and her everyday spirit is what we love about her. And this family means more to Adam and I than we can express—they’ve supported us, trusted us and given us every opportunity to have really great horses. So it’s a special set of victories.”

A 2014 bay overo mare by Hes Stylin and out of Redhot Clusified LL, “Jade” is owned by Joyce Cassata of Morganton, North Carolina. She’s the only Double C Acres horse owned in Joyce’s name—and easily Joyce’s favorite, especially since the white “J” marking on her right barrel seemed to brand the mare as Joyce’s from the start.

This year, two mares were in the running for the Scarlet Print title: Jade and Shes Stylish, a 2017 sorrel overo mare who is also owned by Double C Acres and won the Scarlet Print Award last year. The award presentation came down to a tiebreaker of the horse with the most first-place awards; Shes Stylish had 14 firsts under individual judges at this year’s show, but Jade’s clean sweep with 15 first-place callouts gave the aged mare sole ownership of the 2020 Scarlet Print award.

The Scarlet Print Award is presented in honor of Scarlet Print, a 1991 overo mare who earned 10 world championships in only four years. She was owned by Michelle Engle of Bakersfield, California, who established the award after the mare retired from the show ring in 1995.
