Wells Wins Adequan NAAC Championship

Friday’s competition at the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan^® North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show in Oklahoma City, Okla. featured the $260,000 added 2012 Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity Finals. This championship event welcomed back 51 non pros to compete in a clean-slate format for $618,000 in cash. When compared to 2008, this year’s purse is more than 45% larger due to NRHA Nomination Program money and hearty entries. In addition to the purse, finalists receive a variety of prizes from NRHA Corporate Partners and NRHA Futurity Event Sponsors.

The finals were packed with passion and determination to win coveted NRHA Futurity titles. In the end, two riders challenged each other for the top score, and tied with a 218.5. After a highly contested run-off, they earned an identical score once again (216) and now share the title of 2012 Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity Champion: Jesse Asmussen and Mandy McCutcheon.

Andrew, Iowa’s Jesse Asmussen rode his Smart Chuka (Smart Spook x Chuka Chic by Smart Chic Olena) to win the co-championship. In August, the pair won the reserve championship in the level 4 and level 3 non pro divisions at the NRHA Cowtown Classic Pre Futurity. Just a month later, they claimed the championship in the level 4 and level 3 non pro divisions at the High Roller Reining Classic Futurity. Tonight, the stallion also added a level 3 non pro division championship to their resume for total NRHA Futurity earnings of $62,995. $3,150 of that total goes to Douglas Allen, Smart Chuka’s nominator.

NRHA Million Dollar Rider Mandy McCutcheon (Aubrey, Texas) and Customized Gunner (Gunner x Custom Made Dunit by Hollywood Dun It) won the non pro go-round with a 219.5. In October, McCutcheon and the mare won the Turnabout Farms Non Pro Futurity and Southwest Reining Horse Association (SWRHA) Futurity for owner McQuay Stables Inc. (Tioga, Tex.). McCutcheon took home a paycheck of $36,090 and $1,900 went to nominator McQuay Stables, Inc.

Level 4 non pro championship prizes include: a Montana Silversmiths buckle, a saddle from Bob’s Custom Saddles, a John Deere hay bag, a pair of Rios of Mercedes boots, a Classic Equine Contour Pedic Reiner, Platinum Performance CJ, Assure Guard from Arenus, Sore No More from Arenus, feed from Purina, a $300 gift card from SmartPak, a $100 gift card from Pard’s Western Shop, spur straps from Equine Oasis, a pair of Soft Ride boots, a hat certificate from Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, a $100 gift card to Kyle Tack, stirrups from cowdogsaddles.com and a head stall from New West. Level 4 non pro champion awards also included a four-forse slant gooseneck trailer with living quarters for the use of one year courteously of Twister Trailer, the official trailer of NRHA. The Twister Trailer was custom wrapped by Smartwrap in Oklahoma City.

With a score of 215, Dawn Camp (Justin, Texas) and her Unquestionably Crome (Custom Crome x Dontquestionthischic by Chocolate Chic Olena) clenched the level 2 and level 1 non pro divisions. They also ended the finals in third place in the level 3 non pro division and sixth in the level 4 non pro division. Camp nominated the mare to the NRHA Nomination Program, so she earned the rider’s portion of the purse ($55,375), plus the nominator incentive ($2,915).

The Prime Time Non Pro division and level 3 non pro division reserve championship was won by Ronald Thompson (Whitesboro, Texas) on his Taris Dreamer (Magnum Chic Dream x Taris San Cute). They earned $2,945 for the prime time win, plus another $36,400 for their other placings. Reserve honors went to Jose Vazquez (Markham, Ill.) on Slj Custom Style (Custom Legend x Slj Stainless Style).

The Youth Non Pro Futurity championship, determined by the go-round score, goes to Cade McCutcheon (Aubrey, Texas) on Tom McCutcheon’s Dually With A Star (Mister Nicudual x Dun It On A Star). The team also won the reserve championship in the level 2 non pro and level 1 non pro divisions. At the mere age of 12, Cade qualified for the non pro finals one year younger than his mother Mandy who qualified for her first time at the age of 13. Former Youth Non Pro Champion Jaci Marley (Plainview, Tex.) earned second place this year on Jennifer and Mark Marley’s Dodge This Gun (Dun Gotta Gun x Footworks Yellow Jac by Footworks Finest) with a score of 211.

Each year, NRHA recognizes the highest scoring first time exhibitor in the Non Pro go round with a championship buckle. In addition, the Non Pro rider’s trainer receives a check for $5,000. This year’s winner is Dawn Camp and her trainer NRHA Professional Jordan Larson.

Wells is an Adequan NAAC Champion
Today, the Adequan Championship Arena featured youth from throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico competing for an Adequan NAAC title. In the 13 & Under class, Kenleigh Wells (Valley View, Texas) and Rayelynne Wells’ The Ultimate Magnum scored a 216 to best the field by two points. The Ultimate Magnum is a 2004 gelding by Magnum Chic Dream and out of Queen De La Club. Wells represented the NRHA South Central region in the Adequan NAAC.

The reserve championship went to Northwest region’s Nicholas Muir and Vandys Final Play (Playper x Vandy Bar Tivio). They marked a 214 for owner Sue Muir of Lynnwood, Wa.

In the Adequan NAAC Team Championship presented by SmartPak standings, the Mountain and South Central regions are tied for the lead with 131 points, followed by the Northwest (108.5) and the North Central (87).
