Red Roses In Tinseltown Auction to Benefit Rein In Cancer
May 9, 2012Rein in Cancer has teamed up with Ron and Corie McRorie, Dave and Bonnie Silva and the National Reining Horse Association for a big fall fund-raising event.
At the NRHA Futurity Sale in December, Red Roses In Tinseltown, a 2011 filly by Hollywoodstinseltown will be sold, with all proceeds going to Rein In Cancer. Ron McRorie has generously transfered ownership of the filly out of a money-earning daughter of Colonel San Peppy (x Colonel Freckles) to Rein in Cancer for the fund raiser
“I was inspired by Jordan and Taylor Larson’s generous hearts during the Rein In Cancer fundraiser at last year’s Futurity,” Ron McRorie, who has spearheaded the fundraiser said, in reference to the auction of the saddle that Jordan won the 2010 NRHA Futurity in. “I have had family members affected by this dreadful disease – one as young as eight years old. I truly believe that if we are in a place and are able to reach out and help families, we should.”
Partnering on the project are Dave and Bonnie Silva, who own Hollywoodstinseltown, a stand-out stallion by the legendary Hollywood Dun It. Bonnie Silva noted, “We thank Ron McRorie for contacting us and presenting us with this opportunity to help Rein in Cancer. It is people like Ron that make you believe – people who really do care unselfishly. Thank you Ron for your donation and support of Rein in Cancer.”
McRorie shared, “Rein In Cancer is a great and wonderful foundation which allows us the opportunity to reach out with a donation such as this. It supports our sport and the great people involved. I hope this can encourage other great things in the future.”
Rein In Cancer was founded five years ago, and since that time has raised over $600,000 and endowed the Shirley Bowman Nutrition Center at the Charles and Peggy Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City. Once the center was endowed, Rein In Cancer founders decided to change directions.
“The financial burden is so great,” noted Shorty Koger, “that it can take everything a person has to pay for the medical bills. Or worse, they are unable to pay for some medications and procedures not covered by insurance that might make a difference.”
Co-founder Tracie Anderson said, “Sometimes it’s just a matter of figuring out how to pay the power bill or buy horse feed, because the family goes from two incomes to one – or because the insurance does not do enough.”
Beginning in 2012, members of the NRHA, American Quarter Horse Association, the National Reined Cow Horse Association, and the National Cutting Horse Association who are diagnosed with cancer can receive a one-time donation of $500 from Rein In Cancer. The organization will also create a venue for loved ones of the patient to give a directed donation as well to benefit their friend or relative. Rein In Cancer President Cheryl Cody noted, “We’ve already helped quite a few patients with this new direction and it’s gratifying to see how much this assistance is needed – and the good it does. We so appreciate the contribution of the McRories and the Silvas and this project will raise even more money to directly benefit those who need it the most.”
