July 1, 2010 Off By Roberta Johnston

The second section of the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Non Pro Derby took over the Oklahoma State Fair Coliseum Arena on Wednesday, June 23. The non pro competition was stout with 179 entries vying for their share of $87,500 in added money.

Nearly half-way through Wednesday’s section, Michael Garnett of Lincoln, Nebraska and his gelding ARC Smokin Gun made their presence known with a tremendous performance for a score of 220.5 to lead Level 4, Level 3 and the Prime Time Non Pro divisions into Friday’s finals. The four-year-old by Gunner and out of Custom Mahogany was bred by Arcese Quarter Horses and has accumulated over $18,000 in NRHA earnings. The duo also earned the Prime Time non pro reserve championship at this year’s NRBC.

Leading levels 2 and 1 is Tami Nelson riding Plus Me Big Time (Shine Big Time x Skip The Hick O Lea). The six-year-old gelding is owned by Nelson and Jan Fleet of Canyon, Texas. Their go round score of 219 was also enough to earn second in Level 3 and a three-way tie for third in Level 4 Non Pro division. Plus Me Big Time has over $22,000 in NRHA earnings.

The Youth Non Pro Derby Champion is determined by the go round score. Winning the championship with a 215.5 was Jordan Donnelly, Aubrey, Texas and Smokems Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Peppys Smokem), a four-year-old mare owned by Kimberly Ferguson. Fourteen-year-old Donnelly is a past NRHA Youth Non Pro Futurity champion and has over $83,000 in NRHA earnings. The duo is not done yet. They also qualified for uFriday’s finals in levels 4 and 3.

A three-way tie for the reserve championship showed the tight competition in the youth derby. Earning a score of 214.5 and the co-reserve honors were Jenna Blumer riding Im Sugar Not Trash (Lenas Sugarman x Im Not Trash), Laura Sumrall aboard Einsteins Fancy Pine (Einstein x Freckles Fancy Pine) and Jaci Marley riding Chexable (Inwhizable x Megarita Chex).
