It was almost a 1,700-mile drive from Idaho Falls, Idaho, to Katy, Texas, for Ty Jenkins to come show his reining stallion Bay Shine at the 2010 National Reining Breeders Classic, but it turned out to be worth the trip.

Not only did Ty’s trainer, Martin Padilla, mark a 219 on the 8-year-old stallion to place 10th in the $25,000 National Reining Horse Association Open 1 Reining on Friday, April 16, Bay Shine also earned his owner $600 and an NRHA pewter trophy when they marked a 143.5 to win the NRHA Intermediate Non Pro class on Saturday, April 17. “This is my second year of doing reining and he’s just been great. He’s perfect,” Ty said.

By Shining Spark and out of Mainly Jac, Bay Shine has almost $45,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings. Although he only has two foals registered with AQHA, Ty said they have started breeding mares to him.

“We’ve enrolled him in the NRBC and in a few years, maybe some of his foals will show here in the Classic as well,” Ty said.

In second was Jessica Sternberg, marking a 141.5 on Pop Top Whiz and earning a check for $471.

The National Reining Breeders Classic, celebrating its tenth anniversary at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas, is the most successful stallion incentive program in reining history. In just thirteen years, the NRBC has grown to include upwards of 230 subscribed stallions and in 2009, there were over 2,800 enrolled foals. Annually, the payout at the National Reining Breeders Classic exceeds $1.3 million. For information on the NRBC, visit the web site at www.nrbc.com or call 580-759-3939.
