Tarleton men dominate in Snyder
April 17, 2010With two rodeos left in the regular season, Tarleton State University’s men’s rodeo team has a solid grasp on first place in the regional standings with 3,470 points, almost 900 more than second-place Vernon College.
Tarleton’s men’s and women’s teams traveled to Snyder, Texas, to compete in the Western Texas College Rodeo held April 1-3.
The men’s team collected 595 points to earn another first-place finish as a team and in three individual events.
Individually, Issac Diaz placed first overall in the saddle bronc riding, while teammates Chase Williams (tie-down roping) and K.C. Curtis (team roping) both dominated in their respective events with straight across wins.
Also for Tarleton, Craig Wisehart, a bareback rider, finished sixth in the long go, and came back with an 83-point ride in short go to place third in the average.
The women collected 140 points over the weekend to hang onto their regional lead over South Plains College.
In barrel racing, Stephenville resident Phylicia Stewart won the average, while Michelle Allison placed fourth and Kody Engle placed sixth overall. Kody Engle and Lillian McMullan placed second and fifth, respectively, in the long go of the breakaway roping.
In goat tying, Cassie Vierstra won the long go with a time of 7.1 seconds and placed third in the average.
Other team members making the short go included: saddle bronc-Tate Owens and Tol Cowley; tie-down roping-Lance Millican, Dustin Dewine, Miles Ashton, Chad Williams and Justin Brashear; steer wrestling-Ryan Taylor and Calvin Brevick; team roping-Frank Fernandez, Eric Fabian, and Blake Fountenot; barrel racing-Ginger Hathcock and Lacey Scott; and goat tying-Courtney Danylo and Shelby Smith.
It looks like a regional championship is waiting in the wings for the men, and possibly for the women. College rodeo fans know what that means-a trip to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., in June.
